The Beginnings of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group

In 2011, in between the release of CassaStar and CassaFire, I began the Insecure Writer’s Support Group—IWSG for short. A comment to a fellow writer, noting that he needed such a group, led to its beginnings.

At first, it was a monthly blog hop – post the first Wednesday of every month. A couple years later, I set up the website with the intentions of providing a database of databases on all things writing related. We started a Facebook group and soon our own Twitter. Then came the first IWSG Anthology Contest in 2015, inviting our members to submit to a paying anthology, and it became an annual event. We then ventured into Twitter pitch parties with #IWSGPit, and many members found publishers and agents from the event. We partnered with Reedsy and WEP and started our own Instagram account.

It’s been a labor of love and my fellow IWSG Admins work so hard. But the IWSG has achieved its purpose—to help other writers and authors. And that’s all I wanted—to give back to others for all the support I received on my journey.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

      By happenchance. If you read most authors bio, they will tell you how they always wanted to be an author, how at an early age they already had the fever to write. Not me. I never had any interest in writing a book, a newspaper article, or a poem. I even hated to write status reports for projects I was working on.

So what happened you may ask? I have always been an avid reader of Science Fiction and fantasy. One morning, well after I had retired, I woke up with what I thought was a unique S/F concept and told my wife "I can write a book."

I didn't realize how wrong I was. Writing is a profession, and like any other profession requires you to learn the craft to be successful. Anyone can publish a book today, but without readers does that make you an author? Those that want to be writers from an early age acquire that skill through study and practice as they mature. I on the other hand was seventy when I made my pronouncement. Only luck saved me. I met a woman author online, and with her help I managed to produce my first book, "The Talon of the Unnamed Goddess," which by the way was not my original idea. That was the Riss series and took several years longer to see the light of day. And for all you aspiring authors who haven't started writing, I will tell you my twenty-eight novels, over two and a quarter million words, all started with a single word.

Clem Daems is a native of Chicago, Illinois and a graduate of the University of Arizona. He served twenty-two years in the US Air Force. Since then, he has worked as a software engineer, course developer, and adjunct professor, teaching mathematics and Computer Science.

He has always been an avid reader of Science Fiction/Fantasy but never had an interest in writing or being an author. So, it was surprising when he began his first novel, several years after his retirement, at age seventy. His first novel, co-authored with Jeanne Tomlin, "The Talon of the Raptor Clan"--recently reissued as the "Talon of the Unnamed Goddess"--was a 2010 EPPIE finalist in Fiction/Fantasy.

Clem is an award winning author and an active member of the Science Fiction Writers of America.

His hobby--a life-long one--has been Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Clem is currently retired and living in Tucson, Arizona.

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I’ve been writing since I was about six years old. When I was in first grade, my teacher asked us to write a sentence about Dick, Jane and their dog, Spot. I wrote a paragraph, and she scolded me for writing too much! But I had the last laugh when my first novel, In Sunshine or in Shadow, was released and she actually congratulated me!

I studied journalism at university—which stood me in good stead when I began researching my stories—but historical fiction was always my first love. I wrote several “practice” stories) the books that will remain “under the bed”) until, in 2003 when, during a Romance Writers of America conference, the germ of an idea came to me. I went home fired with enthusiasm and began feverishly creating characters and setting and plot. That story would eventually become Sunshine.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Perhaps it stems from being a writer, but I absolutely cannot abide poor grammar!

When my daughter was younger, I used to correct her grammar—not that often, just when it was really necessary. Well, I guess she thought it was too often, because she began calling me “grammarific,” a nickname that stuck!

The most irritating grammar mistakes in speech are “should/would of” instead of ““should/would have,” using “of” when it’s not necessary (“It was too big OF a job,” and lay vs. lie. But it’s written grammar errors that really irritate me, like using apostrophes for plurals, mixing up its and it’s, there, their and they’re, and you and your. My kids always pointed out that there’s grammar check on their computers, but grammar doesn’t always catch these mistakes. I made sure they knew the proper spelling of absolutely everything!

I believe I was destined to be interested in history. One of my distant ancestors, Thomas Aubert, reportedly sailed up the St. Lawrence River to discover Canada some 26 years before Jacques Cartier's 1534 voyage. Another relative was a 17thCentury "King's Girl," one of a group of young unmarried girls sent to New France (now the province of Quebec) as brides for the habitants (settlers) there. My passion for reading made me long to write books like the ones I enjoyed, and I tried penning sequels to my favorite Nancy Drew mysteries. Later, fancying myself a female version of Andrew Lloyd Weber, I drafted a musical set in Paris during WWII.
A former journalist and lifelong Celtophile, I enjoyed a previous career as a reporter/editor for a small chain of community newspapers before returning to my first love, romantic fiction. My stories usually include an Irish setting, hero or heroine, and sometimes all three!
I am a member of the Romance Writers of America, Hearts Through History Romance Writers, and Celtic Hearts Romance Writers. A lifelong resident of Montreal, Canada, I still live there with my own Celtic hero and our two teenaged children.

Kan Savasci Cycle Series by Chase Blackwood

Tell us something really interesting that has happened to you!

The question in itself is interesting. It forces me to stop and think of what the word “interesting” means. I have been in social settings where I’ve been asked about my work, present and prior. I’ve divulged what I could, and would notice eyes slowly moving toward phones or the door. Silence follows as there is no easy response.

In a sense, I lose my audience because they cannot relate. I think that the further from “normal” the story is, the harder it is to connect to. Ironically, and almost paradoxically, the more extreme a story, the more entertaining it is in a book or on TV.

Some of the less relatable, yet “interesting,” things that have “happened to” me are:

I have had people try to kill me (whether by knife, gun, or vehicle), I’ve fallen off a cliff and survived, I’ve been challenged by kung fu masters in China and won (although I did get injured pretty badly in one bout), I’ve fast-roped out of helicopters, I’ve evaded a search party in the mountains for days, I’ve interviewed terrorists and garnered confessions, I’ve saved lives. These events have partially shaped me. More importantly, these events allow me create more dynamic scenes in my books. I draw upon my life experiences to breathe a sense of realism to conflict and to the characters experiencing it (shameless plug: check out the “Kan Savasci Cycle” to see what I mean).

More relatable and equally interesting: I’ve scuba dived (diven, dove?) all over the world (I’ve encountered sharks, had a dive partner rip my mask off as they ran out of air, done wreck dives, deep water dives, night dives), I’ve driven a train in Cuba because the conductor and I were bored and got to talking, I flew a plane over the Caribbean for the same reasons, I have accidentally met some interesting people while working as a catering bartender (Al Gore, Montel Williams, the Kennedys), I’ve loved and lost, I’ve trained and raised a service dog (she was lovely), and I’ve had the good fortune of traveling around the world meeting new people and exploring some strange places.

Again, these events improve my world-building and writing. They allow me to create a more vivid world.

An aside, the crux of interesting. Often, interesting times are not peaceful times. They are not always safe. They are rarely pleasant. They can be filled with conflict, which is the essence of a writer’s tool bag. One cannot write a story with zero conflict, no one would read it.

Daily life is different, routine. I’ve met many fascinating people who haven’t done some of the asinine things I’ve done, and I find them endlessly fascinating. I find them interesting. It’s not necessarily what we’ve experienced, but what we’ve done, and what we continue to do as we’re shaped by our experiences that define us. It is the expression of the collection of one’s life experiences that I find interesting.
