SPECIAL GUEST Colleen Mooney
Welcome Colleen please tell us a little about
yourself:
I’ve relocated to Birmingham
Alabama, Madison New Jersey, New York City, Atlanta Georgia returning to New
Orleans in between each move before leaving again. If you count Katrina, I have moved out of New Orleans and back four times. I plan to stay
put now.
I started in the public grade school system until
there was an opening in the Catholic school, St. Christopher Catholic Grammar
School. From there it was onward to Sacred Heart of Jesus High School and I
graduated from Loyola CATHOLIC University of the South with a B.S. in Guilt, or
maybe it was something else. What stuck
with me from all this Catholic education was never take no for an answer.
I worked in the AT&T system and was down-sized,
up-sized, and re-sized until I spent 20+ years there before retiring.
I have been an avid Scuba diver and Underwater
photographer, owned and raced sailboats in the Gulf of Mexico and the BVI. I
love to travel, and my mother always said I was born with a suitcase in my
hand.
I have been a member of many Mardi Gras Krewes,
Super Krewes, and organizations. I paraded in the Krewe of Cork, Orpheus, Iris,
Tucks, Joan of Arc and the Halloween Krewe of Boo. I never met a parade I
didn’t like.
I am an ardent animal lover and am the Director of
Schnauzer Rescue of Louisiana, also know as NOLA Schnauzer Rescue, a breed
specific organization for over 17 years. I love to write, and I write about what I know
and love! You can take the girl out of New Orleans, but you cannot take the New
Orleans out of the girl!

How old were you when you got your first pet?
My pets were there
first. My dad was always bringing home
dogs. He took my aunt’s dog named
Changy-Boy, a big Chow so he could have a yard and my earliest memory of a dog
was me sitting on Changy’s back when I was two years old against the house. He
was an old dog then.
My first pet that I
claim as my own was when I was twenty and moving into my own apartment. A gal where I worked brought in a little
black puppy, a Schnauzer mix, with four white paws named Cricket. She said she wasn’t sure her big dog was
going to do with a new pet in the house.
Everyday I asked that woman to give me Cricket saying her big dog was
going to hurt her. Finally, on day five
she did.
I named her Cricket
Ann. I have a middle name, don’t you? I
took her everywhere with me, even to training in Birmingham with South Central
Bell where we stayed in a hotel for six weeks.
What prompted me to write about our furry friends?
With a background in
rescue and because dogs were always a part of our family, I didn’t see how I
could not include them. Throughout my
life, and every dog that has come into it has had his or her distinct
personality. I’ve only had one cat and
she was a very sweet cat, but I’m definitely a dog person, a Schnauzer person
to be exact! They are engaging, easy to train and so willing to please you. Schnauzers
are little people in fur coats!
Cats, dogs, other
I have had a cat in my twenties, but have had dogs all my life.
Other pets I have enjoyed having are lovebirds, parakeets, canaries and
goldfish!. I had two parakeets and two
canaries and both pairs produced continuous offspring. My husband calls me ‘Mother Nature’ since it
seems all pets do well in our home.
Pet I’ve had the longest:
Schatz was an
eight-week old puppy when I got her. She
was a full bred, black schnauzer and I got her as a Christmas present one year
before I started rescue. She was with me
for fifteen years, the longest I ever had a pet. The next one was Schnitzel, a rescued
schnauzer I found on the highway, and she was with me thirteen and a half
years. Schnitzel could have been as old
as three when I found her. My Meaux, who
I write about in my books, has been gone a year and a half. I had thirteen and a half years and he could
have been as old as three when he came into my rescue and never left. He was a great dog and I still feel his
loss. Several of my friends and fans
suggested to keep him as a character in my series. There are so many things he did with me and
to amuse me that I don’t think I’ll run out of Meaux stories anytime soon. I don’t think I’ll ever get over him.
Favorite pet names:
Favorite names of pets I’ve had that are no longer with me are
Cricket Ann, Meaux Jeaux Mooney, Schatz, Schnitzel, Spaetzle, Tara and Earhart.
My current pets—all rescues—are named:
MoonPie Mooney, Mauser the Schnauzer, Murphy Mooney and Tweezer. Yes,
I have four schnauzers that are my own.
In rescue I have the honor of naming pets who come to us with no
name that we know of. I particularly
liked the names of rescued pets, Merlin, Clyde, Ollie, Zoe, Sophie, Pretzel,
Gumbeaux (Gumbo) and Mambeaux (Mambo). In
rescue, if the dog has a name, I will keep it unless he or she doesn’t respond
to it. It’s fun to see the dog’s personality
and then fit him or her with their own name.
About 75% of the people who adopt a rescue from me keep the name.
Cook for your pets?
I do. I cook for MoonPie, mainly because she has serious allergies and try to find a dog food without green peas, white potatoes, salmon or Vitamin E is a never ending and unsuccessful search. EVERY dog food has either green peas or white potatoes if I find one without salmon and vitamin E. Even dog foods cooked with human grade ingredients (I order this for the others) has peas, white potatoes, salmon oil or Vitamin E. I don’t mind since it makes such a big difference in her quality of life!

Currently, no. I do have plans to write a crime series that is based on fact and actual crimes.

Kelly Hashway fully admits to being one of the most accident-prone people on the planet, but luckily she gets to write about female sleuths who are much more coordinated than she is. Maybe it was growing up watching Murder She Wrote that instilled a love of mystery, but she spends her days writing cozy mysteries. Kelly’s also a sucker for first love, which is why she writes romance under the pen name Ashelyn Drake. When she’s not writing, Kelly works as an editor and also as Mom, which she believes is a job title that deserves to be capitalized.
Kim Hunt Harris is the USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling author of the Trailer Park Princess Christian cozy mystery series.
Kim knew she wanted to be a writer before she even knew how to write. When her parents read bedtime stories to her, she knew she wanted to be a part of the story world. She started out writing children’s stories, and her stories grew as she did. She discovered a gift for humor and a love for making people laugh with her tales, and the Trailer Park Princess series was born.
Kim loves to not only make her readers laugh and entertain them with a good mystery, but also to examine the issues the everyday people face…well, every day. Issues such as faith and forgiveness, perseverance and tolerance. Set in Lubbock, Texas, the fun books feature a cast of quirky characters, outrageous situations, a drama queen of a dog, and from time to time, a tear or two.
Kim lives with her husband of more than thirty years and two teenage kids in Lubbock, TX.
Susan Boles is a USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestselling author who lives in Mississippi with her rescue mini Dachshund and rescue cat of no particular breed. You’ll find her writing mysteries centered around small southern towns with lots of great characters.
Lisa B. Thomas
Born and raised in Texas, I always knew I wanted to be a writer. Finally, after thirty-three years as a high school journalism and English teacher, I released my first novel. Having grown up reading Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, and Agatha Christie, I was drawn to the mystery genre.
I write clean, classic whodunnits with realistic characters and situations. It’s probably because my first book was based on a true-life murder mystery from my own family. That book, Sharpe Shooter, led to the Maycroft Mysteries. I also write Killer Shots Mysteries and the Beachside Bookshop Magical Cozy Mysteries (co-written with Paula Lester.) I call my books “Mysteries with Heart & Humor,” and that’s just what you’ll get.
When not writing, I enjoy my grown husband and dog, my children, grandchildren, grandpets, photography, traveling, and antiquing (aka. buying and selling used junk).
Emily Selby is a Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author who lives between France and New Zealand with her husband, daughter and a multilingual rescue cat. She loves writing and reading cozy mysteries with a sprinkle of romance, full of quirky characters and set in charming little towns.
Joanna Campbell Slan
National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan has written and/or edited 40 books, including both fiction and non-fiction works. In addition to being included in Amazon’s list of Top 100 Mystery Authors, Joanna was one of the early Chicken Soup for the Soul contributors, and her stories appear in five of those New York Times bestselling books. Her first non-fiction book, Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience, was endorsed by Toastmasters International, and lauded by Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter. She’s the author of three mystery series. Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death (Book #1 in the Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series) --was shortlisted for the Agatha Award. Her first historical mystery—Death of a Schoolgirl: Book #1 in the Jane Eyre Chronicles—won the Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence. Her contemporary series set in Florida continues this year with Second Chance at Faith (Book #4 in the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series). In addition to writing fiction, she edits the Happy Homicides Anthologies and has begun the Dollhouse Décor & More series of “how to” books for dollhouse miniaturists.
Ava Mallory is a multi-genre USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author of what she affectionately calls Mysteries with Heart. When not dreaming up stories full of twists and turns, she's spinning heartwarming tales of love, laughter, and a healthy dose of mystery.
Chelsea Thomas is technically two people... Married writing team Chelsea and Matthew Thomas. Chelsea and Matt have spent the last 9 years living in Los Angeles, where they have worked as screenwriters. There, they have worked with such companies as CBS, SONY, and Nickelodeon. Now, with the completion of their first cozy mystery novel, Apple Die, they are proud to say that they are novelists, too.
Sam Cheever is a USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author who writes mystery and suspense, creating stories that draw you in and keep you eagerly turning pages.
