Writing the Serialized Novel By Gail Z. Martin author of The Jonmarc Vahanian Adventures

Writing the Serialized Novel

By Gail Z. Martin

The stories in The Shadowed Path were originally released individually, as short stories and novellas, but they were always conceived as one continuous tale. The idea of releasing a novel by the chapter or section isn’t new—Charles Dickens wrote many of his novels this way, publishing them a bit at a time in the popular magazines of the day, back in the 1800s. The Shadowed Path presents the entire first novel of Jonmarc Vahanian’s rise from fishing village to legendary warrior.

Writing a serialized novel is a little more challenging than a regular book. Since each section is released as it’s finished, you need to have the whole story firmly in mind, because you can’t go back and change earlier parts if you get a great idea halfway through! For the reader, it’s a bit like watching a TV series live instead of being able to binge on Netflix at the end of the season. If I’ve done my job right, I keep you on the edge of your seat, wanting to ‘tune in again next week’ to find out what happens next!

Fortunately, The Shadowed Path collects all of the ‘first season’ of Jonmarc Vahanian stories, so you don’t have to wait!

The Dark Road
The Jonmarc Vahanian Adventures Vol 2

May you lose all you love to the flame and the sword—and the Dark Lady take your soul!”

Jonmarc Vahanian fled from the raiders and monsters that killed his family, but when danger dogs his steps once again, he leaves the traveling caravan that gave him shelter to become a mercenary in nearby Principality. His fighting skills help him rise through the ranks, and draw the attention of a Nargi general—and the general’s undead mage. An old, unsettled score turns deadly, trapping Jonmarc in dangerous intrigue. He can save himself—and betray everything he holds dear—or die a hero as the raider’s curse holds true.

This collection is the second set of short stories and novellas that reveal another phase of Jonmarc’s growth from a blacksmith’s son to becoming one of the greatest warriors in the history of the Winter Kingdoms.
