Q and A with Mark Wallace Maguire
If you could have dinner with any person living or dead
who would it be? It would have to be C.S. Lewis. I am a huge fan of his
fiction and non fiction and am a layman’s Lewisian scholar. I also think I would enjoy dinner with him, not
only out of my admiration for his brilliance, but also because he really took
pleasure in eating and drinking and it sounds like it would be a truly good
time and not just a ‘fanboy’ moment.
What literary pilgrimages have you gone on? I’ve ventured on several. I’ve been on the W.B. Yeats
pilgrimage tour with my wife. We visited Sligo where we worshipped in the
church where he is buried and where his grandfather was lector. We also visited
many of the sites he wrote poetry about throughout the Sligo area and visited
his tower, Thoor Ballylee south of Sligo. That was a grand time.
I also visited the homes of several American authors
including Carl Sandburg’s
home, Connemara in Flat Rock, N.C., William Faulkner’s home, Rowan Oak in Oxford, Mississippi, Byron Herbert Reece’s homestead in north Georgia and
many, many more. I’m also
very fortunate that living throughout the South growing up, there are so many
places that are named in Southern literature that you can visit a writer’s home or setting for a book
without even meaning to such as Charleston with Pat Conroy or Macon, Georgia in
relation to Ferrol Sams’s books.
I never tire of experiencing those types of events whether
purposeful or not.
Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, are there any you’d recommend? I love a good
audiobook. (My first novel, Alexandria Rising, is actually coming out on
audible this Spring.) I think the talent it takes to successfully narrate an
audiobook is highly under rated. The one audiobook that has struck me the
hardest is The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, narrated by Joe Morton. I had read the book when I was in
college, but listening to the majesty and gravitas of Morton’s voice had me in
tears at times.
Is there a sequel to, ‘In Pursuit of The Pale Prince?’ If
not, what else are you working on? Yes, there is a sequel to ‘In Pursuit of
The Pale Prince’ slated for
publication in fall 2020. I am very excited about it. It has taken much longer
than most of my other books, but I am pleased with the result. We are in the
beta editing stages. I also have a prequel novella to The Alexandria Rising
Chronicles I am close to finishing as well and another non fiction book on my
experiences as the father of a child with special needs.
What advice do you have for writers of any age who are
just starting? Don’t stop. Don’t give up. Practice. And above all, have
fun. If you aren’t having
fun, then just don’t do it. Don’t set out to write a novel. Set out to
write and then let the book take over.
Over 5,000 years ago, in the place you call Northern Europe, a battle was looming. The Southwen were marching north in search of land. The Northern Kingdoms were fragile and scattered and The Pale Prince was trying to unite them, seeking any symbol of hope, of past glory to rally his people. Hundreds of miles away, a man dies and leaves a crown to his son. A crown that can unite the Northern Kingdoms. But can the boy deliver it in time? Join him and find out. A new adventure awaits inside.
